High School Summit and Press Conference - March 30, 2006
In order to encourage the involvement of youth in Sacramento, the City invited high school students to participate in a special General Plan summit. The purpose of the meeting was to get youth involved in planning the future of Sacramento and to encourage them to attend the next set of Town Hall Forums that began in late May.
Over 150 students and teachers from 16 different public and private schools throughout Sacramento attended the event. At the downtown Library Galleria, students listened to a presentation about the new General Plan and then were given the opportunity to identify their vision for the future of Sacramento.
Beginning with interactive exercises, including a visual preferences survey, students let City staff know which housing, transportation, recreation and shopping options they preferred. Students also told the City what was missing in their neighborhoods and what type of places and services they wanted to see.
In addition to the summit, Mayor Fargo held a press conference for the students where she answered a variety of questions. Student reporters asked questions about topics ranging from flooding to crime and safety.
